A thematic, intimate, clever, thoughtful debut solo LP by the amusing and affable Blur drummer, decorated with shimmering synth sounds, sampled radio sounds, gentle percussion and gentle but arresting vocals. More on the lines of his film and TV compositions than an Blur songs, this makes for a fascinating listen with lots of nuance and sensitivity. Standouts include the oddball pace of opener Devil’s Island, the dark, foreboding but catchy electro-pop of London Bridge, the cleverly arrhythmic and oddball HK, which includes a variety of voices and samples from Hong Kong radio stations, and 1000 Miles, written as a love song to his partner while recording in Iceland, and after they’d had a row just before he left home. Something lovely, thought-provoking and original to tune into. Out on Cooking Vinyl.
