The absurdity and irony of modern life, anthemic existentialism, panic attacks and more come in this 10th fine, witty, wry new indie, rock and post-punk pop album by the Washington band fronted by Ben Gibbard. “Pacing across the room while she’s asleep / Tears raining down your cheeks / You’re trying to hold on,” sings Gibbard on opener I Don’t Know How To Survive. Roman Candles mixes self-restraint and explosion on Roman Candles, a song that wrestles with the idea of “learning to let go”. Here To Forever questions the existence of God and more in a catchy, hooky number framed humorously with Gibbard trying to hurry up the production of the band’s latest album vinyl at the beginning of the video. Other standouts include the poetic Foxglove Through The Clearcut, and the movingly melancholy title track: “Here in the asphalt meadows /there’s only one thing that grows/ finding the light through the concrete/ getting trampled under our feet.” Intelligent, well-crafted, emotional and always bringing a fresh perspective and narrative. Out on Atlantic Records.
