A gloriously uplifting new release by the collective from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, joined by the horns of Ghanaian highlife band Santrofi in celebratory songs inspired by Makisi dance gatherings and sung in various languages - Tonga, Luvale, Shona, Nyanja and even Lingala with Congolese singer Desolo B. Tracings in the sand refer to the movement of dancing and joy in these gatherings. The core of the band are lead singer Mathias Muzaza, whose voice captures both a vulnerable melancholy as well as something celebratory, alongside the jangling beauty song of guitarist Trustworth Samende, bass player Abundance Mutori, keyboard player Phathisani Moyo, percussionist Miti Mugande and drummer Ndaba Coster Moyo. Standouts include the joyous Nzara Hapana, the fabulous call-and-response singing of Makisi inspired by the ceremony of Lukumbi, the crisp rhythms and vocal harmonies of Bakalubale, Tamvele Mama, Ndipe, Makola (with Desolo B) and Kandoga. Irresistibly joyous, rich sounds, and impossible feel moved to get up and dance to. On OutHere Records.
