After a series of acclaimed mixes and other releases, the London-based Australian electronica-techno artist Teneil Throssell’s full debut album is a restlessly inventive, oddly alluring, hypnotic adventure tapping into the ecstasy of slow-build and joy in repetition. Perhaps this is at its best in the instrumental throes, but Throssell brings in various guest vocalists, such as British trans activist Kai-Isaiah Jamal’s spoken-word poetry on Human Sound, joined by Obi Franky on that track as well as the very clubby Purple Jelly Disc, while Biggest Mood Ever uses the voice of Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor. There are flavours dance music’s various styles from full on techno Underworld to more ambient Jon Hopkins (the latter collaborates on the title track). There’s a sense of this being creating in lockdown isolation, were clubbing world is remembered and imagined. Naturally with such a release, it’s all about momentum, state of mind and context, but other highlights include Pigeon Barron and the swirl of Bodies of Water, and the rather beautiful Orca, which moves from snappy clicks to throbbing dance to gliding serenity. Out on Mute.
