Silky, soulful new work by the falsetto-smooth London-based New Zealand-Australian musician, singer-songwriter and producer with a sophisticated cocktail or perky pop, jazz, and R&B. Friend or Foe is perhaps the pick, catchy and gospel infused with bursts of brass and a punchy pace. Flowers is another pick, love song of fragrant, gentle beauty, Hopes and Dreams a swooning, soaring, romantic number, Trust has a fabulous jazz bass and drum groove, Freedom draws on the patterns of gospel with syncopations and call-and-response. There’s variety of pace and mood, such as with the quieter, more reflective Everything Everything, or closing track A Little Life. Overall upbeat, celebratory and buoyant release, especially if you enjoy the gentle tremolo of Rakei’s pure vocals and undeniably classy talent. Out on Decca/ Universal.
