It’s about the voice. A classy, silky smooth minimalist new mini-album of eight songs heralds the return of the 23-year-old soul and R&B singer-songwriter from Walsall, following up from her acclaimed 2018 album Lost & Found. These songs are very much about Smith’s voice, the instrumental elements on these songs very subordinate to her sleek delivery, her extra syllables that lend to an American style, but fortunately aren’t overdone. “The hardest thing - You are not addicted to me” she sings on opener Addicted about a broken relationship, that’s a double-edged. Bussdown changes the pace, and rhythm and style with hint of reggae and hip hop, alongside guest rapper Shaybo, but Smith’s voice is like warm honey in sunlight, pouring across everything without edges, effortlessly smooth. The songs Time and Home, and with no more than acoustic guitar and light stick on the drums, allows the voice to flutter and float beautifully, while Digging shows a greater level of ‘stressing’ with its heavy exhale chorus alongside the trills, leaving closing track Weekend, mixing falsetto with a deeper backing effect to finish off the eighth day of this album. Out on FAMM.
