Beautiful debut of low-key acoustic simplicity by the singer-songwriter from Texas who is now based in Nashville, with a soft, quiet voice that resonates with dry humour and understated profundity. Kirby grew up homeschooled by two ex-cheerleaders in small-town Texas, started singing in church with the big sound of pasteurized-pop choruses of evangelical worship services. After high school, Kirby moved to Nashville where she created her own sound and developed a circle of fellow musicians. Her sound, variously comprising quiet piano, guitar, brushed drums is accompanied by her soft, subtle voice and gentle, dark humour. The nine tracks are consistently good, but the standouts include Secret Language, Peppermint, Traffic! which builds into a bigger sound to an explosive conclusion, and the title track. A hugely mature, sensitively made, and enjoyable debut. Out on Keeled Scales.
