A wonderful third album by American singer Nicole Monique Wray of rich, high-quality retro soul decorated by her soaring voice, 70s Detroit-style grooves and emotional songs that carry you with their energy and sheer class. Wray, now in her early 40s, has been around a long time, first appearing as guest vocalist on the song Gettaway for Missy Elliott's first album Supa Dupa Fly in 1997. In 1998 she released her own first LP, Make It Hot, but then spent many years collaborating and guesting on others records. Her second LP, Queen Alone, eventually appeared in 2016. But hopefully Piece of Me will launch her into a far bigger audience, a beautifully distilled mixture of basslines, brass, keyboards and her multi-syllabic skills, transforming the listener to a hot summer of 1976. Standout tracks include Piece of Me, Under The Sun, the beautifully rhythmic Through It All, I Do, Games People Play, and the lovely stripped back acoustic guitar and voice track, Melody, with guest Melody Bloom Bacote. Out on Big Crown Records.
