Mesmerically beautiful third LP by the Algerian tuareg desert quintet, all atwirl with superb vocals, clever layering, intricate guitar work, and a somehow wonderfully entwined guest vocal appearance by Gruff Rhys, formerly of Super Furry Animals. Aboogi is named after their new studio in their adopted home in Tamanrasset, Algeria, a major Kel Tamasheq with their building shaped like a characteristic local dwelling structure. Rhys appears on the final track, Adar Newlan, a tale of national sorrows and tragedy in Tamasheq language, where the Welshman sings of fellowship, solidarity and tea. Other standouts include the opener, Achinkad, the allegory of a gazelle who must flee her homeland and family with beautiful singing by frontman Sadam (Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane), Tamiditin, which features the croaky voice of the late poet and Tinariwen co-founder Mohamed Ag Itlale, known as Japonais, and Tinariwen member, Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, joining Sadam on vocals in the on the battle epic Tindjatan, and Laouni, featuring French musician Marco Ngoni brings with the bass acoustic gnawa guembri. Magically transportive. Out on City Slang.
