Released without fanfare like those of the collective Sault’s recent five (with producer also Inflo involved here), a fierce, sharp, set songs, particularly about mental health issues, race and music industry evils by the brilliant London rapper and Mercury prize winner. Simz, having recently won that accolade for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, released last year, pulls no punches throughout, and it’s an album matching that same quality. Broken is a devastatingly say-it-like-it-is invective, with standout lines such as “Why is mental health a taboo in the Black community?”, and all through the album there’s no shortage of wit or wordplay on race issues, human rights and broken Britain, such “I refuse to be on a slave ship, give me all my masters and lower your wages”. Other standouts include the drum-filled, soulful and orchestral X (“Undervalued, underappreciated in the workplace, why give you my ideas in the first place?”) the catchy bassline-rich Gorilla, Silhouette, and Heart on Fire. Inflo’s production offers a brilliantly powerful counterpoint from classical to gospel, funk and soul. Another great release of two tremendous talents combined in uncompromising refusal to do and say anything but what they want. Out on Forever Living Originals.
