Restlessly imaginative, with arrhythmic oddness, jittery beats, sounds and disembodied voices, spoken word and trap-hop, this experimental electronica album by the London producer by is an candid expression of the mind in 2020 lockdown. There’s no easy way in but it’s worth sticking with this. The two tracks Built To Last, a sort of pop-trap featuring, Xzavier Stone and the bumpy Let’s Go are abstract, but with some time and immersion to adjust to its style where the tone changes on Simple Stuff. Regular collaborator and rapper Le3 bLACK illustrates worry and vulnerability on the drill of Black Ting, but things get even more creative on Insecure Behaviour And Fuckery, a bold techno adventure interweaving guest Nova’s words in with Drexciyan chords, with Loraine herself delivers strangely dark humour of more self-doubt on the shell-shock sounds of Self-Doubt (Leaving the Club Early). There is some recovery, however, with On The Lake Outside, with guest Baths on vocals offering most beautiful and peaceful and soothing of sounds in this oddball sonic garden. The title track is more exposed an raw meditation on isolation, while Eden Samara explores the shadow world of anxious dreams on the airy R&B of Running Like That. Uncomfortable but fascinating and utterly unlike anything else. Out on Hyperdub.
