Supremely sharp, personal and candid, this third solo album by the Virginia singer-songwriter and Boygenius member (with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker) is a series of brilliant detailed diary entries with a dark, homicidal twist, and filled with ironic, killer lines. The most extreme is Thumbs, with a violent fantasy about killing a friend’s father, here and in others all the more potent as the music and delivery itself is gentle but builds powerfully, simmering with bad relationship problems, sexual or other repressed feelings and secrets. On VBS, recalling a vacation bible school in 2007, we picture preacher “Back in the cabin, snorting nutmeg in your bunk bed, You were waiting for a revelation of your own”. The devil is always in the detail, such as on the heavily ironic Please Stay and “your toothbrush is too much.” Out on Matador Records.
