Short but sweet, this 12th LP by the Portland singer-songwriter Matthew Ward (alongside several with She & Him) mixes gentle folk with upbeat rocky numbers and includes guest appearances by First Aid Kit. The Swedish duo contribute to two of the best tracks, Two Young To Die, and the more upbeat, shimmering shuffle of Engine 5. Other standouts include the bluesy Mr Dixon (featuring Shovels & Rope), the rocky, catchy almost pub-piano singalong New Kerrang (with Scott McMicken), the gentle late-night jazz feel of Dedication Hour (feat. Neko Case & Gabriel Kahane), a saxophone-infused, ethereal cover of David Bowie’s I Can’t Give Everything Away, and to close, a gentle, rather moving cover of the late Daniel Johnston classic, Story of an Artist. Charming, lo-fi, and fun. Out on ANTI- Records.
