With a warm, engaging sound, and beautifully crafted, intelligent songs, this excellent debut by the Nottingham indie quartet transcends genres from pop to country, Americana folk to rock with enduring passion and quality. With production enhanced by Catherine Marks, co-vocalists Tiger Cohen-Towell and Felix Mackenzie-Barrow variously take the lead and backing vocals, with the former’s voice particularly powerful. Opener and standout Antarctica is a gorgeous love song, Lord a soaring, powerful piece of American full of yearning (“I’m a seahorse and I need a little sugar”), Fever Pitch a woozy, menacing number of stirring lust (“I've got your number / So I'm sure you're mine for the taking”), Jet Show is a thumping rock banger with dark humour (“You came for the jet show / This one'll melt your face off / Watch out baby, get down low/ I'm ripping all the chains off’), Parachuter calms down into gentle folk Americana before a trio othe other highlights, the bright breezy pop of All My Freaks, the indie of Hangman, and the three-section Pill. Closer Mercy is a lovely acoustic campfire singalong to round off an album of powerful melodies by a band fully matured in their songwriting and performance. They are surely heading for great things. Out on Gravity Records / Capitol Records / Universal.
