Something of return to form and fun for the superstar singer and actress? Certainly this revisits something of her late 2000s Poker Face- and Bad Romance-era flamboyant, bombastic pop and disco sound where excess and outsider oddness made her name. Lead singles Disease and Abracadabra certainly conjure up some of the old magic with its over-the-top extended syllable stadium chorus (“Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na!”), and an eye-poppingly super-costumes choregraphy-to-the-max video to match. After all, Gaga has never just been about the songs - it’s all about the full otherworldly audio-visual experience. Garden of Eden celebrates a club sound hook and hookup, Killah goes for a glittery Prince synth-funk sound, Zombieboy brings Chic with a dash of metal, and Blade of Grass is a big power ballad. While it’s impossible to replicate the sheer impact of her 2008 The Fame debut, there’s nothing wrong with returning to her core, and playing to her strengths. Out on Streamline / Interscope.
