Over two decades in, this ninth LP by the French electronica band of Anthony Gonzalez is epic, big-scale 70-minute sprawl of smooth, retro-synth pop and ambient indulgence, that has an almost cinematic scale. It’s not exactly an album of snappy hits, more something to immerse yourself in, and let those sonic layers and 80s guitar effects wash over you, a such as on Oceans Niagara, or Amnesia with Gonzalez singing in multi-layered unisons. Us And The Rest even has echoes of Vangelis’s soundtrack to Chariots of Fire. The title track meanwhile begins with ethereal chanting before vaulting into a classic galloping 70s-style disco number with additional pan pipes, Radar Far Gone brings acoustic guitar into the serene vocals, while Kool Nuit, featuring Kaela has atmospheric orchestrals, morphing into some catchy electronica. Lush, complex, multi-layered, reverb-heavy and arguably overlong, over-the-top indulgence, but also admirably impressive levels of fun. Out on M83 / Virgin.
