This second album by the strong-voiced American artist, after the success of folk-R&B fused 2019’s Heard It In A Past, moves headstrong into further mainstream alt-rock echoes of Shania Twain, Sheryl Crow, Florence ATM and Haim, and an emancipated burst of freedom. Her new short haircut might also be evidence of that state of mind, a rejuvenation after first-album tour burnout, after which she has enrolled at Harvard and has seemed to regain a New York sort of energy. There’s mass market appeal to her style, but the songwriting is strong with big, rocking sound, with some interesting electronica elements and dynamic moments of intimacy, with more than one mention of dealing with personal crises, therapy, bad relationships and heartbreak. Standouts include Overdrive, That’s Where I Am, Horses, Honey, Symphony, for the melancholy, slow then powerful stadium-style buildup of sign-of-the-times signoff number, Different Kind of World, in which she’s now “a different kind of girl”. Out on Polydor.
