Classy, effortlessly cool, experimental indie-folk-pop in this third LP the London singer-songwriter, again joined by producer and co-writer Wilma Archer in an album about identity, relationships and self-control. Archer has also worked with the innovative American singer and violinist Sudan Archives. The musical textures here subtle, complex and warm – lush, soft vocals and grungy, fuzz guitars as well as acoustic, a mix of intimacy and restlessness. Standouts include the title track, not about the acting profession as such but about living and breathing as the creative person you aim to be, the stripped back opener Keep On Dancing, and particularly Like I Say (Runaway), with fabulous chord changes and a strong chorus, but touching on the feeling of losing control as time races: “Does it feel like all you have/Is put in black and white?/The minute I’m not in control/I’m tearing up inside.” Other highlights include the slow, intimate, soulful, close-mic style of Binding, the soft click groove of Just A Western, and the subtly psych-folk of closer Wingspan. Ghostly, subtle, gently powerful. Also her first album out on Ninja Tune.
