Clever, wry, witty, refreshing indie pop debut from the Irish singer-songwriter who brings oddball sounds along with the more conventional and has echoes of Fiona Apple in her delivery. That comparison is evident in opener Things That I’ve Learned with crisp rhythms and change of pace. On the aspirational More Like You with a gentle irony she expresses admiration for the titular woman on the internet, and Over Your Head has shades of Tori Amos. Her songs capture, sometimes at a heady pace (see Zombie!) the crazy rush and confusion of being in your twenties (the Dubliner, now based in London is 28) as well as You’re Not Special, Babe to the indie beat heartbreak of Codependency. Meanwhile, Do You Mind? slows things down in a lovely reflective piano-based piece that bulids into a piece of expanding folk. Gartland is an intelligent artist with clear, clean voice who promises much more in future albums and a delicate sense of irony and the absurdity and depth of emotions. Out on New Friends Music.
