Wonderfully entertaining, droll, humorous and articulate new LP by the persona played by Leron Thomas, the Texan New York-based rapper and jazz trumpeter who clever, food thematic hip hop with his chief instrument and beats by friend Damu The Fudgemunk. There are obviously parallels with the sadly departed MF Doom, such as the strength of wordplay and rich cultural reference, not to mention deep-voiced delivery, and Thomas even ironically namechecks him as a non-comparison, but this album is still significantly different to Doom’s 2004 album Mm..Food, while also having brilliantly unpredictable rhymes it is lesser cartoony, and more decorated with Thomas’s beautiful trumpet playing , including on pure instrumentals such as Blue Agave, his playing at times capturing a 1930s cheeky jazz cornet sound that’s perfect complement for this type of hip hop with Damu adding great jazz sampling and more. Yet the food metaphor abides, just as with the previous, and second album, Ha Chu (see the single Carrot Cake). Standouts include RIgatoni (with added chess move theme), Mogwai, Duck Wok, Hungry Hippo, BLT, and the faster rapping rhythms of Stick Around. Very tasty indeed. Out on Def Presse.
