This vibrantly uplifting and energised concert album is a centenary birth celebration of the great upright bassist and composer by a nine-piece band performing his work at Berlin’s Philharmonie hall, including Mingus Big Band pianist Danny Grissett, US drum star Gregory Hutchinson, Swedish baritone sax, by Sweden’s Magnus Lindgren, Austrian bassist Georg Breinschmid, young German alto saxophonist Jakob Manz and trumpeter Matthias Schriefl and French singer Camille Bertault. A strong lineup of older and newer talent, with Schriffl’s chatty grumbling trumpet, Grissett’s piano and Manz’s sax especially pulling out all the stops. It’s hard to pick a favourite of the six numbers with the jaunty Jelly Roll opening, all the way to closer Better Git It In Your Soul, but Fables of Faubus is a standout, filled with passionate roars, and Bertault adds a smoky, soaring dimension to Goodbye Pork Hat. Overall a fabulous tribute to the great man, whose music and uncompromising passion remains incomparably and timelessly brilliant. Out on ACT Records.
