Haunting, meditative, dark, mellow, beautifully atmospheric, dream-like sounds and vocals colour this third collaborative album between the American singer and film-maker, with some final co-writing and synth work by the late Twin Peaks theme composer Angelo Badalementi, who died in December 2022. Evocative, slow, beautiful ghostly interwoven melodies abound, from the opener She Knew, co-written by Badalementi, with Chrystabell’s vocals intertwining in a gorgeous duo with herself, creating a semi call-and-answer and echo style. Long, slow synth notes, both beautiful with a gentle menace also summon up cinematic scenes. It’s a slow, mesmeric sound, unhurried, transcendental, moving seamless into The Sky Falls. Then You Know The Rest brings in that classic Lynchian sound - the rich, guitar tremolo and some reversed recording, capturing an aural and subconscious netherworld. Lynch describes the album as inspired by a vision that he experienced during a night-time walk through a forest of tall trees, over the tops of which he saw a bright light. As he recalls it, the light became the lilt of Chrystabell’s voice and revealed a secret to him. That dreamlike state persists throughout, all the way through, from the woozily weird and sensually seductive The Answers To The Questions, to Dance of Light, and closing standout Sublime Eternal Love. Transports you to deep recesses of the mind, not so much in disturbing way, more a floating and sensual one. Out on Sacred Bones Records.
