Wonderfully minimal, emotionally strong, yet also becalming third album of Southern soul by the Portland, Oregon band that includes guitarist and songwriter Willy Vlautin and the perfectly paced delivery of singer Amy Boone. The flavour of this music is somewhere between Lambchop, Tony Joe White, Bobbie Gentry, Kris Kristofferson and at times reminiscent of Brook Benton’s Rainy Night in Georgia. The lyrics are vividly delivered, especially on the on-the-road setting of Little Earl, the unsinkable woman of Kid Codeine, or the setting of escaping the daily grind of Drowning In Plain Sight. Most songs are delicately decorated with deft touches of trumpet and keyboards by Cory Gray, as well the sensitive touche of veteran players Sean Oldham (drums) and Freddy Trujillo (bass). Among other standouts the love songs Hold Me Slow and Past The Shadows summon absolute tenderness. Slow, superb and timelessly sensual. Out on Decor Records.
