Now the solo project of Harrogate’s Olly Alexander, this third album is an unabashed set of catchy commercial disco pop numbers, ticking all the usual boxes, successfully doing what it sets out to do with gay abandon. The gimme that good love and all-night-long dance rhythms are pretty skin deep, but are still successful toe-tappers and head-nodders, particularly the openers Consequences and Starstruck. The title track begins with a little dark undertone but soon reverts to those classic disco beeps and rave swells. Alexander’s clear, highly produced voice is perfect for this sort of high-sheen production too, and he’s even joined by Kylie Minogue on A Second To Midnight. Other toe-tappers includes Crave, and if you really want to turn up the cheese to 11, Elton John joins on the second disc with a cover of Pet Shop Boys’ It’s A Sin. The album dips somewhat in the middle but by the end the sheer energy washes over anyone wishing for something original, so it’s simply about getting down to it around disco ball Out on Universal.
