Warm, engaging, bright, wistful but uplifting, this fourth LP by the Christchurch-formed quartet band is retro indie pop coming out of lockdown with light at the end of the tunnel, the sun bashfully bursting out of of heavy clouds. Standouts include opener Give It Hell, Mona Lisa with blast of bright saxophone, the delicate vocals of Where The Light Used To Lay, lovely staccato brass on Honestly, It’s Fine, then Razorblade, which builds into orchestral strings and fuzz-guitar, the faintly Cure-like Forest guitar on Astral Projection, or the full-on energy of rock-pop number In The Eyes Of Love, which harks back to 80s-something by Karina and the Waves. Honest, straight-up indie pop with a feeling of belonging and achievement, particularly with the band spread across New York, London, and New Zealand, and the work coming from recording sessions, both temote and in-person, from Wellington to Florence, New York to Los Angeles and London studios, no wonder there’s a tone of collaborative unity.
