From Brenda Holloway's 60s hurt yesterday we come to pain of a different kind in 1975, an upbeat reggae classic that had already been recorded twice. Written by Phillip Mitchell as It Hurts So Good, and first recorded in 1971 by Katie Love and the Four Shades of Black on the Muscle Shoals Sound label, it was then done by Millie Jackson in 1973, and several years later by Jimmy Somerville. But this version, produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry remains a favourite, a unique pain-and-pleasure combination that is reflected in the style and lyrics. You always come back for more, and Cadogan, now 65, is still on the circuit.
