Melina Duterte of Jay Som and Ellen Kempner of Palehound join forces in an excellent, symbiotic debut album of intelligent lo-fi indie of light and shade, joy and melancholy, dark humour, wiry guitars and lovely melody. Filled with wry lyrics abut solitude, insecurity and disappointment, being ignored and failing to take responsibility, opener Back of My Hand nevertheless builds to a big, stirring, uplifting chorus. Sand Angel is more downbeat, Stay in The Car is rocks about automobile-based couple rows, Went Out With You is a sun-drenched acoustic number about being accidentally kicked in your sleep and so on, with perfectly weighted, understated killer lines. The final and title track is a beautiful number that in lovely contradictory fashion, it mixes romance with disaster - “But we've got time, and you are holding me / End of the Earth will set it free.” But perhaps pick of the bunch is Sick of Spiralling, a love song about taking personality responsibility with a delicious melody, sadness, anger and defiance that flips between both sides of the coin. “I thought, If I can't have my own back How the fuck can I have yours?".
