A welcome return from the veteran (since ‘93) Idaho rock band fronted by songwriter, singer and guitarist Doug Martsch, their first since the the 2020 album of Daniel Johnston covers, back with a set nine powerful, mature, stirringly rich-guitar songs. Standouts are particularly the first three – Gonna Lose, Fool’s Gold and Understood, all of which Neil Young himself would surely be proud of, and later on, Spiderweb, and the stormily epic closing track, Comes A Day, which wraps up the bigger picture with a rather beautiful melancholy: “Comes a day when no one gets away / Nothing stays forever.” Still, from the microcosm to the microcosm, there’s something timeless about this music. Out on Sub Pop.
