Oozing camp panache, and packed with some previously released singles and very entertaining videos, Franco-American brothers Virgile and Elliott Arndt’s debut LP captures their mesmeric moves and superbly fun, semi-ironic gloriously glossy synth-art-pop. Their oeuvre is as much visual as aural, their choreography and costumes both bewitching and amusing, not that the music isn’t also finely crafted, in part inspired by the 80s, and filled with quirky sounds and fist pumping catchy choruses and shimmering sounds. This is ever-present from fabulous opener Faux Maux, the plinky robot sounds of Rent Free, the very 80s synths of the smooth Sketches of Pain or the punchier, angrier 99 Ghosts. Other standouts include Hi Tension, Walking Away From My Demons (with theat winged video), the quirky Workhorse, Full Circle, or dark, edgy closer Scratch. Wonderfully oddball, entertaining, visually arresting and ambiguously earnest, especially when live. Out on Drag City.
