Ingenious, playfully inventive electronica by Jeremy Barnes, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, inspired by the idea of how errors lead to invention and discovery, written while teaching music to incarcerated teens at YDDC juvenile detention, as well as online classes in recording and songwriting to refugee youth in New Mexico from Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Tanzania. There is a wonderfully twinkling, clockwork vitality and sense of wondrous nostalgia to these instrumental tracks which drive forward with a sprightly pace, combining clean and dirty, soft and hard sounds, with a driving, krautrock-feel rhythm, and a variety of moods, but for the most part this is energising, upbeat, get-things-done music. Highlights include the opener Going To Town, the gentler, sky-gazing, space-feel Orion’s Belt, the very percussive Night Feeling, the intricate build of Human Error 5, and Sea Voyage, but this all a joyously uplifting listen.
