Alongside their upcoming feature film, a stylish, witty, smash’n’grab, satirical, brilliant and sometimes brashly in your-face hip-hop debut by the West Belfast trio of stage names Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, who rap mostly in the Irish language. As well the poetically punchy nature of the language which immediately catches the ear, their hip-hop delivery and rhythms harks more back to more to a classic early 90s era of the genre, which essentially is a very positive trait, cleverly joined also with Irish folk, pop, rock, dance music, British garage and R&B. Take for example the flute and violin infused as well as sweary Drug Dealin’ Pagans. But above all it’s a celebration and preservation of the language and culture which works brilliantly for hip hop - fast, furious wordplay, cheeky, provocative and punchy, slickly delivered vowels and consonants, all instantly enjoyable even for non-speakers. The balaclava look and Troubles references might not sit comfortably for some, and there are familiar themes from drugs, crime, violence, money and mental health, but there’s no denying the youthful exuberance and energy here. The album is packed with skits and pub and club atmosphere, with highlights including the fabulous former Song of the Day Better Way To Live featuring Fontaine DC’s Grian Chatten, as well as Harrow Road, Sick In The Head, and the rave-y highs of Rhino Ket. Overall it’s an articulate, energetic banter-rich ride. A trailer of the film, which which had a debut at Sundance is also below, and includes Michael Fassbender. Album out on Heavenly Recordings.
