A Nashville ‘supergroup’ in the most free-flowing, relaxed form imaginable, Spencer Cullum, Andrew Combs, Jordan Lehning, Dominic Billett and others combine in a beautiful intertwining of pastoral folk, country, and dream-like, psychedelic Americana. With producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Lehning initiating the project, it’s a wonderfully eclectic blend, especially as the album was created in an ancient abbey off the British coast – Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle of Wight. While now an established Tennessee native, also acclaimed for his Coin Collection releases, sharing some of the vocals alongside the other three, Spencer Cullum’s gentle Romford accent intermingles with an oddball, Robert Wyatt-esque charm over pedal steel and other country sounds supplied by the rest of the sensitively balanced band. Highlights include Cullum’s composition and former Song of the Day, the syncopated, psychedelic, otherworldly Odd Energy, a ghostly, beautiful waltz in the form of Rainbow Road featuring Andrew Combs that breaks into a fabulous electric guitar solo, the lullaby-like soft whistle of Little Bird, the deliciously beautiful opener Dreams of You, the gentle Blood Moon and Never Cry – two warm country songs fronted by Dom Billet – and the musically serene caress of In The Evening, but the entire album is packed with relaxed beauty. A Nashville album with a difference, especially closing with a fun, silly, improvisational chatty Cockney-style number led by Cullum, In The Pub. Drink it all in. Out on Full Time Hobby.
