As laid-back in style as anyone out there, but also strongly personal and filled with vivid lyrical detail, the Philadelphia singer-songwriter’s seventh solo album is deliciously melodious and worth several listens. Previous Song of the Day Like Exploding Stones examines a turmoil of mind with a gorgeous tune, but perhaps the centrepiece is Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone), a woozy melt of slide guitar and electronics with reflective lyrics festooned with his natural drawl. Other standouts include Chazzy Don’t Mind, and the travel-themed Goin on a Plane Today and Flyin (Like a Fast Train), with take us slowly but beautifully to all the right places, and closing track Stuffed Leopard, a lovely acoustic guitar number centring on child’s toy on a windowsill. Like a huge sofa, languorous at times in this long, double album of 15 songs, but one where you can sit back, with feet up, and comfortably reflect with pleasure. Having moved from Matador, now on Verve Records, and recorded at his new home studio in Philly.
