The queen of noir returns with her ninth LP – steeped in powerful, beautiful, piano-based numbers of melancholy and rich vocal harmonies, with rumination about dangerous love, religion and of course, death. In opener The Grants, referring to her family name, opening with ethereal gospel-type choral harmony rehearsal, and sweeping orchestra, includes the line “My pastor told me when you leave all you take is your memory.” The album is also full of more caustic, jaw-dropping, killer lines, such as on the title track, “When's it gonna be my turn? / Open me up, tell me you like me / Fuck me to death, love me until I love myself,” a song that also namecheck a big influence, Harry Nilsson and his voice breaking on Don’t Forget Me. Or on the powerful A&W, “This is the experience of being an American whore.” Musically there are all sorts of oddities, such as Judah Smith Interlude, a recording of a preacher’s sermon during which you can hear Lana laughing to herself, or the recycled elements of older track, Venice Bitch, but with trap beats on Taco Truck x VB with added textures and trap beats. Other standouts include the gorgeous Fingertips, Margaret (with Bleachers), Candy Necklace (with Jon Batiste)and particularly Let The Light In, featuring the perfect-fit guest - Father John Misty. Overall, among her finest, a full 16 tracks of classy, sublime melodies and her ever powerful and intimate presence. Out on Polydor.
