Created in the shadow of severe mental and physical health problems for the London experimental duo of Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, their latest LP nevertheless has a joyful flavour, mixing electronica, samples, soul and funk, and featuring an ensemble of strong guest vocalists. Among the standouts is the agile, staccato guitars and the soaring, delicate voice of Holly Walker on the bittersweet Otherside, and she also appears on the string-laden Peace Talk featuring Celtic marching drums. Lead single opener Blackoak is also soulful banger, featuring a choir of contributors and smooth orchestral sounds alongside samples - a classic recipe for Maribou State. Another standout is All I Need with vocals by the also excellent Andreya Triana. Overall, this is a light, feelgood, slightly repetitious, if still enjoyable record, one that feels like therapy, a balm to heal difficult times. Out on Ninja Tune.
