Crisp, breezy, sharply written pop accompanies the welcome return of Joe Mount and co with a seventh studio album that has bittersweet post-lockdown flavour, but ultimately is positively uplifting. It begins, perhaps uncharacteristically, with the darker, slower Life and Death, and perhaps the outstanding track is a guitar strumming, Bowie-influenced chord changes of I Lost My Mind, and Right On Time channels a Steely Dan vocal harmony style. While slightly pared back, Metronomy still retain that English RIviera flavour of their lauded album from 2011, with the cheesy but catchy It’s Good To Be Back, as well as Things Will Be Fine, Love Factory, and Loneliness On The Run. A buoyant, smooth and tasty collection of nicely crafted pop, where, despite all the frustrations of the last two years, everything in the garden appears to be lovely. Out on Because Music.
