Always infectiously fun and effervescently charismatic, the blue-haired South African star’s third LP bursts with witty, sex-positive braggadocio, sung in Xhosa and English, and spanning the rhythms and sounds of Johannesburg and Durban with electro-pop and cross-genre dance. It’s a booty-shaking rumpus of pleasure and energy from the off, with an ode to her favourite travelling breakfast of Scrambled Eggs, a big up to her favourite body part on Big Booty whipping up a frenzy of rhythms (especially on In My Kitchen) with her voice and big attitude, humour and devilishly dextrous description of the down and dirty. Tequila is a take on R&B pop, Do My Dance is an ode to self-empowerment, as is the more reflective, confession Falling. I Love People mixes house-y beats with spoken-word in an erotic recipe, calling for the lover “the lick to her envelope”. But there’s more to Sanelly than the filthy fun at which she excels. The slower, more tender and emotional Mntanami is a rather beautiful, moving reflection on absentee father and a difficult childhood. Transgressive Records.
