How could there a more joyful, eccentric, evocative and infinitely inventive opener than this, on album described by Zappa as "a movie for the ears" – 1969's Hot Rats? His second solo album after dissolving the original Mothers of Invention, much of it was captured on what he called a homemade 16-track recorder, with multiple overdubs. The virtuoso guitarist, jazz-rock-pop-classical-fusion composer actually played octave bass and percussion here, alongside the Mother's Ian Underwood on keyboards, flue, saxophone and clarinet, Shuggie Otis on bass and Ron Selico on drums. The overall effect brings a mixture of nostalgia, upbeat mischief and vivid energy arriving at new places with every new turn. A masterpiece.
