Contrasting in apparent confidence, two powerfully acerbic, self-examining first-person perspectives by the postpunk-pop band from Portsmouth from their EP Barstool Preaching, out on Nice Swan Records and released in the spring of 2020. The slower one is from the fearful, highly self-conscious, candidly attention-seeking perspective of the performer in the spotlight, the more upbeat is a sneering character in the shadows, a lying truth-twister in songwriter form. Loneliness of a stage performer
Loneliness of a stage performer
Not born for the stage
Never be your idol
I once contemplated suicide
Just to see the reaction on my Facebook feed
And I scrolled through pages upon pages on eBay
To find the biggest ego
And I bid to the highest bidder
And I
I try to tell myself that I'm my own man and my own entity
But truthfully I'm merely a creation of what you want me to be
I'm a poser
I'm a fake
I'm a want-to-be
Tell me what
Tell me what
Tell me what do the people want?
(Tell me what- Tell me what- Tell me what do the people need?)
Tell me what
Tell me what
Tell me what do the people want?
(Tell me what- Tell me what- Tell me what do the people need?)
Tell me what
Tell me what
Tell me what do the people want?
(Tell me what- Tell me what- Tell me what do the people need?)
Tell me what
Tell me what
Tell me what do the people want?
(Tell me what, Tell me what, Tell me what do the people need?)
Do you want to see me burn my soul?
Do you notice when I'm feeling low?
Did you notice my bad-hair day?
Do you notice the words I say?
Tell me, Tell me, Tell me, Tell me
Tell me, Tell me, Tell me, Tell me
Tell me, Tell me, Tell me, Tell me
Tell me, Tell me, Tell me
My own man
My own entity
My favourite thing abut telling a story is you can bollocks your way along
I start the first half of it a little white lie and then I just carry on
I like to blur the line between style and substance just to get my point across
I like to blur the line between truth and bollocks just to get my point across
I'm like a tabloid newspaper
I'm like a preacher man
Devoid of integrity
I'm a liar
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm very keen on the notion of falsity just to make it a better song
I love the idea of bending a tale just to make it a better one
We never really sat at the bar quoting Danny Dyer, drinking Stella Artois
Who do you think I am, do you think I'm an honest man? (No i don't)
I'm like a tabloid newspaper
I'm like a preacher man
Devoid of integrity
I'm a liar
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I was always told that the very best lyrics would come straight from the heart
I was always told that every lyric I wrote- it would tear me apart
I would have a notebook full of my deepest thoughts and I would sing them to a tune
So my Iphone's full of clever little lines, I sing them out of tune
I sing them out of tune
I'm like a tabloid newspaper
I'm like a preacher man
Devoid of integrity
I'm a liar
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
I'm a twister of the truth
