A triple tribute to the sadly departed but hugely influential South African trumpeter, composer, singer, cornet and flugelhorn player, and leading anti-apartheid campaigner. Grazing In The Grass is a hugely engaging instrumental and a massive hit in 1968, with that distinctive sound embellished by cowbell. It was composed by the singer and actor Philemon Hou, but was actually inspired by an earlier tune by Masekela, Mr. Bull No. 5. Khauleza roughly translates as "hide the booze from the police" explained here by Masekela at the Womad festival in 2012, where he explains how alcohol was banned in the townships, and shows off his singing voice. And finally, Soweto Blues, the great protest song written by Masekela about the Soweto uprising in 1976 led by school students and the deaths that followed as well as calling for the freedom of Nelson Mandela, here performed with Miriam Makeba.
