A world war
Was announced
Days ago
But they didn't know.
The lazy sunbathers
The lazy sunbathers.
The sun burns through
To the planet's core
And it isn't enough
They want more …
Continuing from yesterday’s Pure Comedy by Father John Misty, and now lyrics laced with irony, we focus on probably one of the finest practitioners, that elusive, difficult and sometimes controversial Manchurian, Steven Patrick Morrissey. Perhaps the ultimate ‘fiddling while Rome burns’ song, it displays irony of both tone and action, with itsslow-burn lilting delivery, the relaxed, guitar and gentle brush drumming, is all ironic, constantly hinting at an apocalyptic buildup. It comes from his fourth solo album after The Smiths breakup, 1994’s Vauxhall and I. While Morrissey wrote the lyrics, the music was by his chief musical partner and rockabilly-style guitarist, Alain Whyte, who also has written for artists including Madonna, Chris Brown, Rihanna, The Black Eyed Peas.
With the shadow of nuclear war hanging over the world again as US president Donald Trump considers confronting North Korea, while the continued bombings killing Syrian citizens continue from both sides, this song remains relevant all about the absurdity of how people can ignore what’s going on in the wider world. As ever it’s a brilliant, funny song, but with the blackest of humour. So while all this is happening, please keep the noise down low …
Religions fall
Children shelled
Children shelled? That's all
Very well, but would you
Please keep the noise
Down low?
Because you're waking
The lazy sunbathers
Oh, the lazy sunbathers
The lazy sunbathers.
