Another sleep-themed song, not so much evoked by lyrics, but by the extraordinarily loud but also woozy sound of the band headed by Kevin Shields and his innovative tremolo guitar technique. From their second, legendary album, Loveless (1991) the quartet of Shields, also on vocals, Colm Ó Cíosóig (drums, sampler), with Bilinda Butcher (vocals, guitar) and Deb Googe on bass can make a fearsome wall of noise, turning it into an artform that, if you attend a live show with earplugs your trousers and every sinew vibrate, and yet behind all these layers is a clear love of pop melodies. The band, signed to Creation, did things the old-school, slow way – they were able to buy a house and live together, and then spent inordinate amounts of time experimenting with everything that bands do, but particular with sound. The Loveless album became a musical landmark, evoking a stoned, otherworldly level of consciousness wrapped in a love song.
[Verse 1]
When I look at you
Oh, I don't know what's real
Once in a while
And you make me laugh
And I'll see you tomorrow
And it won't be long
Once in a while
Then you take me down
Then you walk away
[Verse 2]
When you say "I do"
Oh, I don't believe in you
I can't forget it, ooh
When you sleep tomorrow
And it won't be long
Once in a while
When you make me smile
And you turn your long blonde hair
[Verse 1]
When I look at you
Oh, I don't know what's real
Once in a while
And you make me laugh
And I'll see you tomorrow
And it won't be long
Once in a while
Then you take me down
Then you walk away.
