A spirits-lifting Friday special double-entry edition in the form of the south Korean pansori band, who with vivaciously delivered vocals, catchy pop riffs and beats, redefine the traditional storytelling form as shown in a more recent number and biggest hit so far. As well as the dynamic vocal technique, involving talking chattering and a big range of sometimes operatic singing, the two basses interweave intricate melodies often high up the fretboard, creating a style that mixes funk in with disco, pop and the traditional. Please Don’t Go also involves the fabulous moves of the Ambiguous Company, and Tiger Is Coming is the lead track from their album Sugungga.
Leenalchi includes four pansori vocalists (Kwon Song-hee, Shin Yu-jin, Ahn Yi-ho and Lee Na-rae), two bassists, the songwriter and composer Jang Young-gyu who scored the films Gokseong and Train to Busan, as well playing for SsingSsing, and Jeong Jung-yeop, formerly of Kiha and the Faces. Drummer, Lee Chul-hee, also from SsingSsing, completes the lineup.
As shown in the videos below, including their most hit 2020 album Sugungga, with tales of the Dragon King of the Sea, wizards, rabbits and more, Leenalchi perform wonderfully entertaining, must-see live shows. They are currently on tour, including four performances from 10-12 September at London’s Coronet Theatre as part of the Tiger Is Coming Festival, a celebration of contemporary Korean art, performance and culture which also includes separate performances by the Ambiguous Dance Company on 16-18 September. More of Leenalchi’s music can also be explored, enjoyed and downloaded on their Bandcamp page also released on HIKE.
