How do you create music that's brilliantly clever but also highly accessible, deeply meaningful but tongue-in-cheek shallow? The indefinably wonderful Canadian band seem to have the recipe, interweaving complex riffs with catchy melodies and here, from their 2017 album Wide Open, this song seems the perfect example. It seems to touch on the classic contradiction of expressing disinterest, but also wanting attention, the very essence of pop cool turned inside out and thrown back at itself. Singer Jasmyn Burke's style is all about swivel-eyed mischief, and fellow songwriter guitarist Morgan Walters, who also has a side-career as a TV comedian, is a hugely innovative, eccentric musician, backed by brilliant drummer Spencer Cole and bassist Zach Bines. A great band and a joy to see live if you can catch them.
I got my hair slicked back and my boots on, found my eyeshadow too.
I got my nails stuck on and my jeans up high look in the mirror that is you.
Crack a beer on the way if you think it’s okay feel like a hot air balloon.
If you wanna dance let it take precedence cause the floor is watiching you.
I can’t.
La la la la.
I ain’t lookin' at you, I ain’t wanna be you.
Got my belt on tight and the feelings right wanna walk right up to you.
As I lean on by and look in your eyes you’re like a dream, I dreamt you.
I can’t.
La la la la.
I ain’t lookin at you, I ain’t wanna be you.
I wanna pretend that there’s a pretence, like I’m a psychic staring through you.
Feel your emotions stumble commotion, these are our feelings. feelings for you.
Skipping with leather light as a feather, bondage and breathing nestled like two.
I hope to be there smelling your fragrance, Incense and ocean poured onto you.
I ain’t lookin at you.
La la la la.
Oh oh oh oh.
I ain’t lookin' at you, I ain’t wanna be you.
