A very strong second album by Bristol’s Tor Maries moves from her alt-punk debut to a darker, ironic, caustic anti-love set of songs bringing in more rock and pop styles. The excellent fuzz-guitar Spite for example, an ebullient warning call to anyone who might take her for granted (“don’t you act like I ain’t the fuckin’ man”), has has a bit of an 80s rock feel. The brilliantly catchy Blue Bones (Deathwish) has echoes of her first album with a trademark singing/talking pop/punk, but the title track moves into darker, almost post-industrial electro-pop territory. Roundabout Sadness meanwhile is a melancholy reflection to the sound of a fairground organ. Other standouts include the punchy Vertigo and the opener Balance Is Gone. Overall, a follow-up that proves Tor has plenty more to say in many different ways. Out on Invada Records.
