Following 2022’s Tremblers And Goggles By Rank and compilation Scalping The Guru (see also below), another strong and 38th LP of strident, passionate, original alternative rock by the veteran Ohio indie band decorated by the utterly unpredictable lyricism of frontman Robert Pollard. After opener Another Day to Heal, highlights include Released into Dementia and the Beatles-echo, Ballroom Etiquette, Instinct Dwelling (sample lyrics: “Crypto woman, thermometer child / Alec O'Hare, Mister Cox-Rizzote / Better not see your contraband / You'll wind up in La La Land. / Phenomenal / Impossible fellow / Skeleton yellow/ Spy glasses until lunch”), the epic Slowly on the Wheel, Cousin Jackie, Caution Song, the rather beautiful Queen of Spaces, and Wild Kingdom. Forty years in, and still knocking them out of the park.
