There’s nothing quite like them. Joyous energy and endless invention, the Edinburgh trio’s fourth album is filled with soulful, emotional vocals, fabulous oddball, dynamic beats and sound textures, and already an album of the year contender. Their creative method is improvisational, out of which comes a mass of material that is later revised, refined and perfected through the prism of their long, close friendships of Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham Hastings, and no doubt much more is in store for future releases. The 10 songs are clearly carefully chosen to flow with peaks and undulations, and so the album is best heard in one flowing experience, but among the many highlights are opener Rice, the fluid vocals on Tell Somebody or Ululation, the yelping rhythmic energy of I Saw and Drum, dynamic range of Geronimo and Holy Moly. Vitality and originality seep from every second in songs aswirl with the essentials of music - something to immediately grab your attention, move you in all sorts of ways, particularly with dance, where they are even better in a live performance. Out Ninja Tune.
