“Each time you play music, it becomes new. This is one way I’ve been thinking about memory and the present, past and future times all fitting together. I called it an exquisite moment.” – Philip Glass
Hello all. It’s the very heart of holiday time, at least in one half of the globe, and I hope whatever you’re doing, be it hot, humid or otherwise, it’s enjoyable. With that in mind it seems like the right time to take a brief break from the usual frenetic topic writing and take stock of everything in music you’ve seen and heard this year, either here, or in fact anywhere, releases old or new. So please recommend and share in comments below. Perhaps these can be put into personal or collective playlists.
I’m constantly discovering new music, either via our fabulous Themes/Playlists section, which is mostly composed of releases prior to this year, but also in digging deep for recently published music through oodles of emails sent to me from record labels, artists and PR companies, at gigs and festivals, in record shop shelves, on the radio and through websites such as Bandcamp and Soundcloud. I always have much longer lists, but some of the best of this comes out in our Album section, as well as New Songs/ Song of the Day, which sometimes features new artists only releasing EPs, but also better knowns with an album coming later in the year. On the more deliberating obscure Word of the Week, there’s also a spread of music, sometimes rarely played by anyone, as well the better known, to help illustrate those mini-themes.
So please peruse any or all of these sections if you haven’t yet had time, and pick out your favourite discoveries from these or from anywhere else.
Were you, for example, one of the lucky ones who happened to be shopping in a Third Man Records store, and in with your purchase a shop assistant slipped in a white label vinyl simply labelled No Name in the bag? If you, might now be in possession of a fabulous new album by the White Stripes’ Jack White, with one of his very best for ages. Thankfully it’s all now available officially online too from the mischievous vinyl-loving musician and label owner.
All your tasty treasures shared are very welcome.
