Tears don't get much more moving than this – a double from the much missed singer who had many downs, but undoubtedly hit the heights with her Back to Black album of 2006. Amy Winehouse's tragic death at 27 in 2011, beyond all headlines, the overexposure, the drug, alcohol and relationship problems, robbed the world of a great singer and extraordinary talent. She grew up loving and performing jazz, but the 2006 album, produced by Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, took into full Motown mode, and with it, in that tradition, heartbreak songs and lyrics and expressed through gloriously uplifting music.
Tears Dry On Their Own is written by Winehouse, but has some sampled backing music from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 1967 hit Ain't No Mountain High Enough, written by Ashford & Simpson. Back To Black was co-written with Ronson, and is all about her relationship with the man who tore her apart, Blake Fielder-Civil, who at the time had left her for an ex-girlfriend. Tears aplenty then, but the key thing to listen out for is not merely the voice, her greatness as a lyric writer, but particularly Winehouse's sense of timing, playing in and out of the rhythm of the song in that beguiling, broken, emotional powerful way in which on the great singers can excel.
The Amy Winehouse Foundation is a charity which helps educate and support young people in the area of drug and alcohol problems and supports the development of disadvantaged young people through music.
[Verse 1]
All I can ever be to you
Is a darkness that we knew
And this regret I've got accustomed to
Once it was so right
When we were at our height
Waiting for you in the hotel at night
I knew I hadn't met my match
But every moment we could snatch
I don't know why I got so attached
It's my responsibility
And you don't owe nothing to me
But to walk away I have no capacity
[Chorus]
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
[Verse 2]
I don't understand
Why do I stress the man
When there's so many bigger things at hand
We could a never had it all
We had to hit a wall
So this is inevitable withdrawal
Even if I stop wanting you
A perspective pushes through
I'll be some next man's other woman soon
I can not play myself again
I should just be my own best friend
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men
[Chorus]
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
[Bridge]
So we are history
Your shadow covers me
The sky above ablaze
That only lovers see
[Chorus]
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
[Verse 3]
I wish I could say no regrets
And no emotional debts
Cause as we kiss goodbye the sun sets
So we are history
The shadow covers me
The sky above ablaze that only lovers see
[Chorus]
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
He walks away
The sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm grown
And in your way, in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own.
[Verse 1]
He left no time to regret
Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy
You went back to what you knew
So far removed
From all that we went through
And I tread my troubled track
My odds are stacked
I'll go back to black...
[Chorus]
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to
I go back to us
[Verse 2]
I loved you much;
It's not enough
You love blow
And I love puff
And life, is like a pipe
And I'm a tiny penny rollin'
Up the walls inside
[Chorus]
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to
[Bridge]
Black, black, black, black
Black, black, black
I go back to
I go back to
[Chorus]
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to
We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her and I go back to black
