After the exuberant joy of The Damned's New Rose, we move four decades forward to an equally blistering sound from the LA post-punk trio with a song that has a similar theme. What is the "brand new pearl" on this song? A relationship, or perhaps the joy of songwriting and playing that helps "pull myself out of a haze"? Metaphor or otherwise, this is backed by a tidal wave of guitar buzz-saw sound featured throughout their acclaimed eponymous album of 2017 from the Castle Face label. From this which a host of west coast bands are part of an indie rock renaissance and cross-pollination of playing across different groups. Flat Worms are Will Ivy (Dream Boys, Wet Illustrated, Bridez), Justin Sullivan (Kevin Morby, The Babies) and Tim Hellman (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Sic Alps). Polished work to be treasured, but if you catch them live, plenty here to blow your socks off.
Shine like an opal in the bright blue sun
Capture my vision in a hex
Combing the ocean in the depths of sand
You open to me like a revelation
I've got a brand new pearl
I've got a brand new treasure
I've got a brand new pearl
I've got a brand new treasure
Circumstances are a trial
Build up walls into a maze
But I pull you from my pocket
I pull myself out of a haze
I've got a brand new pearl
I've got a brand new treasure
I've got a brand new pearl
I've got a brand new treasure
An unknown origin a mystery
I wonder how it is that you've come to me
I cherish the reason that it came to be
I cherish the reason and the mystery
I've got a brand new pearl
I've got a brand new treasure
I've got a brand new pearl
I've got a brand new treasure.
